What are the Diagnostic Symptoms? (ICD 10 or DSM IV Classifications of Mental And Behavioural Disorders - World Health Organisation Geneva 1992) This is a diagnostic tool used by Consultant Psychiatrists and the Medical Profession to make a Medical Diagnosis. This document lists the symptoms of psychological illnesses, including addiction and eating disorders. There are self-help organisations which consider “Self-Diagnosis”. The members here believe that if you know about and understand your addiction or your eating disorder you will come to terms with this through acceptance of a solution based on your own experiences and identification with other members. These self-help organisations; and their programmes, are very much a part of the preferred model of treatment in private treatment. The team are very experienced and aware that addictions and eating disorders are psychological illnesses and therefore, work very closely with Consultant Psychiatrists. We are able to advise you and supported you through the assessment process so that you can understand and express your feelings. All illnesses come as a shock when first discovered. We are able to discuss the different options available to you. We are also able to refer you to a Consultant Psychiatrist should you wish. We are also very well-informed about all of the self-help groups and can help you in your own understanding of these should you wish. |

Why seek Diagnosis? These illnesses are progressive, the longer they are left untreated the stronger their symptoms become. Intrusive thoughts about using, or about losing that extra pound are more persistent and resistance to these behaviours seems impossible as your compulsions begin to rule your life. Therefore, diagnosis, education and treatment at the earliest opportunity is crucial. |
